The Nigerian traveller is a shopaholic

Hey guys,

I just came across this article on CNN and its interesting to think that Nigeria accounts for huge tourism revenues in the UK through shopping. This is in sync with the claim that Nigerians hardly travel for just pleasure. As long as any destination offers a business opportunity, you are almost certain, the Nigerian will be lurking around. We sure love to drive a bargain!

Also, Nigerians are culturally bound to buy gifts for friends and family and its seen as a taboo to return empty handed. This is closely linked with the innate habit of the African to consume foreign products.  However, its a disturbing trend to discover that Nigerians, by extension, Africans measure their rise in global social cadre by a heavy reliance on foreign products and services.

Its therefore not a coincidence that the most visited destinations for the Nigerian traveller are typically the ones where he/she can trade and meet socio-cultural expectations.  Dubai, New York, Beijing, Florence, Accra,Paris record some of Nigerians’ opportunistic sojourns.

The world should be looking out for the Nigerian traveller and not frown at the sighting of the green passport because somewhere in between your value proposition and the visitor lies a goldmine.
